Key Events
  • After Napoleon replaced Fernand VII with his brother, the tension between Tegucigalpa & Comayagua helped fuel the break away from Spain.
  • The Central American Congress was formed, but after a brief alliance with Mexico, it was dissolved.
  • Honduras claimed independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. (Alex)
  • In 1823, the first president of Honduras, Manuel Jose Arce, was elected. (Alex)
  • In 1830, Fransisco Morazan was elected as the second president. (Alex)
  • Jose Cecilio de Valle was voted into office in 1834, but died before he could govern so Morazan claimed the title again. (Alex)
Napoleon Effect?
  • Napoleon replaced the Spanish king with his brother, and due to the domino effect, caused the beginning of Honduras.
  • Napoleon started to heavily tax the Spanish, which threatened the cattle industry of Honduras. (Alex)
